GRANTS PASS, Ore. (May. 21, 2026) — Motorists traveling on Interstate 5 south of Grants Pass should expect delays Thursday evening as utility crews conduct power line replacement work over the freeway, transportation officials said.
Beginning around 5 p.m. Thursday, May 21, rolling slowdowns will affect both northbound and southbound traffic between Exit 48 near Rogue River and Exit 55 in south Grants Pass. Officials said travelers could encounter delays of up to 15 minutes while crews replace overhead power lines.
During the rolling slowdowns, traffic control vehicles will pace traffic at reduced speeds to provide utility crews safe access to the lines above the interstate. Officials said the method allows traffic to continue moving while avoiding a full freeway closure.
Emergency vehicles will be permitted through the work zone as needed.
The work is expected to last about 45 minutes, though motorists should prepare for congestion and watch for pilot cars in the area. Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution through the work zone.

Crews will pause work for the Memorial Day holiday weekend before returning for up to three additional work sessions in the coming weeks to complete the power line replacement project. Each session is expected to last between 30 and 45 minutes and will again require rolling slowdowns on the interstate.
