Firefighters Battle Growing Wildfire in Klamath National Forest

NEAR MCCLOUD, Cal. (May 17, 2026) — Firefighters responded Sunday to a wildfire burning between Dead Steer Flat and Orr Lake on the east side of the Klamath National Forest, officials said.

The fire was estimated at about 5 acres and was spreading at a low to moderate rate through grass and timber litter, according to fire officials.

Crews were working to contain the blaze as air resources ordered from the Redding Air Attack Base assisted firefighters on the ground.

No evacuations or structures threatened were immediately reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Officials said firefighters would continue monitoring conditions as suppression efforts continued.

5/17/26 7:00PM USFS Tennant Fire Update:

The Tennant Fire has been roughly 80% surrounded by retardant drops, with plans to completed surround it with additional drops. Two helicopters, two air tankers, and one air attack are committed.

A dozer continues to push line around the fire, with firefighters strengthening the fireline with hoselays.

The fire’s approximate size is 13 acres.
