Pedestrian Killed in Douglas County Crash on Highway 42

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. (Apr. 27, 2026) — A Eugene woman was killed Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Highway 42 in Douglas County, according to Oregon State Police.

Troopers responded to the crash at about 10:59 p.m. near milepost 76 on Highway 42. Investigators said a red Ford Focus was traveling westbound with a green light when it struck a pedestrian crossing from Grant Smith Road toward Highway 99 without a walk signal.

The pedestrian was identified as Vivian Kuntz, 40, of Eugene. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver of the Ford, Leo Thomas Durden III, 38, of Roseburg, was not injured. A passenger in the vehicle, Caitlinn Ann Durden, 35, of Roseburg, also was not hurt.

The highway was affected for about four hours while authorities conducted an on-scene investigation.

Oregon State Police were assisted by Central Douglas Fire and Rescue, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Winston Police Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

The crash remains under investigation.
