Dog-of-the-Week: “Woody” is an Energetic Hound Mix Ready for Adoption

PHOENIX, Ore. (Apr. 26, 2026) — A 1-year-old hound mix with a playful personality and a taste for calmer company is looking for a permanent home after spending more than 100 days at the Jackson County Animal Shelter.

Woody, a neutered male believed to be a Plott hound with possible Labrador retriever or pit bull mix, is this week’s featured adoptable pet. Shelter staff describe him as handsome, polite and full of character, with a relaxed but confident presence.

Though Woody enjoys being around people, he is selective when it comes to canine companions and prefers respectful, well-mannered dog friends over rowdy crowds. Staff say he would do best with careful introductions to any new dogs to ensure a good match.

Woody arrived at the shelter after living a more independent life, where he learned to fend for himself. Since then, he has adjusted to a more comfortable routine and now enjoys sunny spots to rest and relax.

His leash manners have improved significantly, though shelter staff say he can occasionally become distracted and may need continued training. At just a year old, Woody still has youthful energy and would thrive with an active owner who enjoys outdoor adventures, hiking or running.

Despite his energetic side, Woody also knows how to settle down and enjoy quiet companionship. Staff say he would likely enjoy spending time beside his owner at a café, on errands or relaxing at home.

Woody is available for adoption at the Jackson County Animal Shelter, 5595 S. Pacific Hwy. in Phoenix. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Walk-ins are welcome and no appointment is required.

Because Woody has been at the shelter for more than 100 days, his adoption fee has been waived.
