MEDFORD, Ore. (Mar. 19, 2026) — A marked response vehicle belonging to Jackson County Fire District 3 was severely damaged Wednesday morning after a vandal repeatedly threw a large rock at it while it was parked at the Bear Creek Shopping Center, authorities said.
The incident occurred March 18, when the district’s Division Chief response vehicle was struck multiple times, causing extensive damage. Officials said several nearby vehicles and business windows were also damaged.
Fire district officials said such incidents strain limited resources, diverting time, funding and personnel away from emergency response and community services.
“At the core of our mission is a commitment to preserve quality of life and protect property through education,” the district said in a statement. “Incidents like this take away valuable time, resources, and funding that would otherwise go directly toward serving our community.”
Authorities credited the Medford Police Department with responding quickly and apprehending a suspect. No additional details about the individual or potential charges were immediately released.
Fire officials said the incident reflects broader concerns about community safety and urged residents to remain vigilant and look out for one another.
“Our environment is changing, and we all play a part in keeping our community safe,” the district said. “Looking out for each other, whether it’s a neighbor, passerby, or local business, can help prevent situations from escalating.”
The investigation remains ongoing.
