65-Year-Old Oregon Man Dies in Skiing Crash at Mt. Bachelor

MT. BACHELOR, Ore. (Mar. 10, 2025) — A 65-year-old Portland man died Monday afternoon after a skiing accident on a trail at Mt. Bachelor, authorities said.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office said dispatchers were notified at 2:22 p.m. Monday, March 9, after Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrol received a report of an injured skier on the Wanoga Way trail.

Ski patrol members arrived first and found the man without a pulse and not breathing. Medics from Bend Fire & Rescue assisted with extensive resuscitation efforts, but the skier was pronounced dead at 2:56 p.m.

Authorities identified the skier as Nigel Barry Young, 65, of Portland.

Investigators said Young had been skiing with three friends who were ahead of him on the trail and did not witness the crash. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, though deputies believe his injuries were not survivable.

The Wanoga Way Ski Trail is located on the east side of Mt. Bachelor and is accessed from the Cloudchaser Lift. The trail is rated for intermediate skiers.

The sheriff’s office said it is coordinating with Mt. Bachelor staff as the investigation continues.

Officials also thanked ski patrol members, Bend Fire & Rescue personnel and AirLink Critical Care Transport crews for assisting in the response.
