Woman Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting After Gunfire Reports in Grants Pass

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (Feb. 7, 2026) — A woman was fatally shot by police Saturday afternoon after officers responded to reports of a person firing handguns in the roadway in Grants Pass, authorities said.

Officers with the Grants Pass Police Department were called at about 12:30 p.m. to the intersection of Grants Pass Parkway and M Street after multiple 911 callers reported a woman standing in traffic and firing guns. Police said officers attempted to de-escalate the situation by issuing repeated verbal commands for the woman to drop the weapon, but she did not comply.

Police said officers then fired their department-issued weapons, striking the woman. She was transported to Three Rivers Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities later identified her as Alicia Shelton, 43, of Grants Pass. No other injuries were reported.

The Josephine County Major Crimes Team was activated to conduct the investigation, with the Oregon State Police assigned as the lead investigative agency. The Oregon State Police Crime Lab also responded to the scene to collect and process evidence. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing and that additional details will be released once they become available.

As is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, the involved officers were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The Josephine County District Attorney’s Office will review the findings and determine whether the use of force complied with Oregon law and department policy.

Police did not release additional details about what led up to the incident, how many officers were involved, or how many shots were fired, citing the ongoing investigation. Authorities also did not say whether Shelton had made any statements before the shooting or whether officers attempted less-lethal options.

Officials urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues and asked anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant video footage to contact law enforcement.
