Medford-Based Hunter Communications Purchased by Private Equity Firm Oak Hill

MEDFORD, Ore. (Dec 16, 2025) — Hunter Communications, a Medford‑based fiber‑optic internet service provider and Oregon’s largest privately owned internet company, has been acquired by Oak Hill Capital, a middle‑market private equity firm with a long track record of investing in digital infrastructure. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, and the deal remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

Founded in 1994 and headquartered in Medford, Hunter operates a fiber‑to‑the‑premises network spanning more than 3,000 route miles and passing roughly 100,000 locations across the Pacific Northwest. The company delivers multi‑gigabit symmetrical speeds, low latency, and high network availability to more than 25,000 residential, commercial and enterprise customers. Under the new ownership, the company expects to accelerate its expansion of fiber service throughout southern Oregon and beyond.

Hunter already serves a number of Oregon communities, including Medford, and has built out infrastructure in parts of Eugene. Its publicly outlined expansion plans include additional coverage in the Willamette Valley, and prospective service in Salem. Continued build‑out could bring high‑speed fiber connectivity to more households and businesses across Oregon.

Oak Hill Capital, headquartered in New York with offices in Menlo Park and Stamford, has invested in more than 115 companies since its founding in 1986 and has focused heavily on communications and broadband assets in recent years. The acquisition of Hunter marks the firm’s 22nd investment in broadband communications platforms and expands its digital infrastructure portfolio of fiber providers that collectively service millions of premises across the United States.

The transaction reflects sustained investor interest in regional fiber networks as demand for reliable, high‑capacity broadband grows, particularly in smaller cities and rural markets where fiber deployment has lagged. Hunter’s operations in southern Oregon position it to play a significant role in meeting that demand, with local leadership and offices remaining in place.

Hunter CEO Michael Wynschenk said the partnership with Oak Hill aligns with the company’s vision for growth. “Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable fiber connectivity and exceptional service to the communities we serve. Their reputation for successfully scaling FTTP assets makes them the ideal partner, and we look forward to building on our momentum together in this next chapter,” he said.

Jeff Butler, Principal at Oak Hill, emphasized the firm’s commitment to expanding broadband access. “Hunter has built a strong foundation of residential and commercial fiber operations across the Pacific Northwest—a region where we see significant opportunity to increase network access. We look forward to partnering with Michael and the Hunter team in an effort to expand the company’s fiber footprint, enhance service offerings, and continue delivering essential, high-speed connectivity to homes and businesses,” Butler said.

The transaction also includes the exit of Grain Management, a prior investor in Hunter. Michael McKenzie, Managing Director at Grain, said, “We are incredibly proud of Hunter’s transformation into a premier regional fiber provider and are excited to see the company enter its next phase of growth. Hunter truly embodies Grain’s commitment to advancing digital infrastructure and delivering value to communities.”

Under Oak Hill’s ownership, Hunter is expected to continue local philanthropic efforts and community‑oriented programs that have been part of its service model, while working to broaden its network reach and offerings. The acquisition also brings a new chapter for the firm as it looks to scale its fiber network and maintain its standing as a key broadband provider for Medford and surrounding communities.
