Portland, Oregon- A Portland man appeared in federal court Tuesday after allegedly assaulting a federal officer outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in South Portland, federal prosecutors said.
Alexander Jay Boyce, 38, has been charged by criminal complaint with the felony offense of assaulting a federal officer, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon.
Court documents state that on the evening of Oct. 5, Boyce was among a group of individuals gathered near the driveway of the ICE building. Officers reportedly issued multiple warnings to the group to stay off federal property and began clearing the area. Investigators say Boyce refused to comply and spit on an officer’s helmet before being immediately arrested.
“Nobody spits on the brave men and women of federal law enforcement and gets away with it. If you spit on a federal law enforcement officer, you will be hit with federal charges,” said U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford in a statement.
Since June 13, 2025, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has charged 31 defendants with federal crimes related to incidents at the ICE facility, including assaulting federal officers, failure to comply, and damage to government property.
Boyce made his first appearance in federal court Tuesday before a U.S. Magistrate Judge and was released on conditions pending further proceedings.
Assaulting a federal officer is a felony punishable by up to eight years in federal prison.
