Red Flag Warning Issued for Medford Metro and Greater Rogue Valley Area

Medford, Oregon- The National Weather Service in Medford has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Medford metropolitan area and surrounding communities due to critically dry conditions and gusty winds. The warning is in effect from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, August 9. A Fire Weather Watch has also been issued for Saturday afternoon through evening.

The warning covers Fire Weather Zones 620 and 622, which include Medford, White City, Gold Hill, Jacksonville, Talent, Phoenix, Ashland, and the Illinois Valley communities of Selma, Cave Junction, O’Brien, and Takilma.

Forecasters expect northwest winds in the Rogue Valley to range from 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. In the Illinois Valley, northeast winds are forecast at similar speeds. Relative humidity is expected to drop as low as 12 to 15 percent.

The National Weather Service warns that these conditions could lead to rapid fire growth. “Moderate to strong winds combined with critically low relative humidity can lead to rapid growth and spread of new and existing fires,” the agency said.

Outdoor burning is banned during fire season, and officials urge residents to remain vigilant and avoid any activities that could spark a fire.
