Yreka, California- A 5-year-old boy who was reported missing in the Klamath River last Thursday has been found deceased, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday.
After an extensive multi-agency search, the child’s body was recovered Saturday approximately 4.6 miles downstream from where he was last seen near the Sluice Box river access point. He was found about one-third of a mile south of the Seattle Creek river access, officials said.
The Sheriff’s Office said water speeds in the area were estimated at roughly 20 mph, complicating search efforts.
Local authorities, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team, the Karuk Tribe, firefighters and numerous community volunteers took part in the days-long search. The boy’s name has not been released.
“The impact of this loss is felt by all those who participated in the search,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “We join those grieving this unimaginable tragedy.”
The child’s family has been notified. Officials asked the public and media to respect their privacy as the investigation continues.
