NWS Medford Issues Air Stagnation Advisory

Medford, Oregon- The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Air Stagnation Advisory, now in effect until 12:00p on Friday. The advisory highlights the presence of strong valley inversions, which are creating conditions of weak winds, poor atmospheric mixing, and limited ventilation across several counties in Southern Oregon.

Affected Areas

The advisory encompasses Central Douglas County, Eastern Curry County and Josephine County, Eastern Douglas County Foothills, and Jackson County. Cities within the affected regions include Roseburg, Grants Pass, Cave Junction, and Medford.

Conditions and Impact

Strong valley inversions are trapping pollutants near the surface, resulting in stagnant air conditions. This lack of ventilation can contribute to deteriorating air quality, potentially posing health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as individuals with respiratory conditions, older adults, and young children.

The advisory is set to remain in effect until noon on Friday. During this period, at-risk residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activities, reduce the use of wood-burning stoves and fireplaces, and avoid activities that generate additional air pollution.
