Medford, Oregon- The Medford Fire Department responded to a fire alarm and report of smoke at a three-story apartment building on N. Oakdale Avenue on Tuesday evening. Crews arrived in under five minutes and located a small fire in a first-floor apartment.
Firefighters extinguished the fire using a handheld water extinguisher, preventing additional damage. They also removed smoke from the unit and replaced an expired smoke alarm.
The fire was caused by a candle placed on a combustible surface and left unattended. No injuries were reported, and the apartment’s occupant was able to remain in the unit.
The department reminded residents to use candles and other open flame devices safely by:
• Placing them in appropriate containers.
• Using non-combustible surfaces.
• Avoiding leaving them unattended.
Residents are encouraged to follow these precautions to reduce fire risks.
