Elkton, Oregon– On Wednesday, October 2, 2024, Elkton High School initiated a lockdown after a student on campus was reported to be in possession of a firearm. At 1:38 pm, 9-1-1 dispatchers received a call from the school’s principal, who informed them of the situation. At the time of the call, the student’s location was unknown.
In response, multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Sutherlin Police Department, and Oregon State Police, were dispatched to the scene. Additional precautionary measures were taken as nearby schools were placed on lockdown until the situation could be resolved.
While law enforcement was en route, the school contacted authorities again, indicating that they believed the student had left campus. After an extensive search, deputies located the 17-year-old male student near Azalea Drive in Elkton. Upon detaining the student, officers recovered a backpack containing a Glock replica BB pistol.
The student was taken into custody and is being held at the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center. He faces charges of Disorderly Conduct I, two counts of Menacing, and Probation Violation.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident in coordination with school officials and other agencies.
