Mt. McLoughlin, Oregon- Jackson County Search and Rescue (SAR) successfully located and recovered a hiker who became lost on Mt. McLoughlin on Friday evening. The hiker, who lost sight of the summit area’s pole marking system and subsequently left the trail, attempted to find her way towards Fish Lake. However, due to the challenging terrain and nightfall, she was unable to self-rescue.
SAR began monitoring the hiker’s position using her cell phone after she called for help. As darkness approached, the phone’s battery depleted, making further monitoring impossible. By this time, SAR personnel had already been dispatched to her last known location.
The search team found the hiker at 9:04 PM. After providing her with extra clothing, water, and a headlamp, SAR personnel guided her to the nearest road. The hiker was safely reunited with her family at 11:00 PM.
SAR officials credited the success of the mission to the dedication of its volunteers and the assistance of a U.S. Forest Service Ranger.
