Copperfield Fire Estimated at 3,200+ Acres as Containment Efforts Continue

Chiloquin, Oregon- The Copperfield Fire, burning approximately 5 miles southeast of Chiloquin, Oregon, has expanded to an estimated 3,241 acres as of this afternoon, according to the National Interagency Fire Center, Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) Incident Management Team 3 was mobilized last night to support firefighting efforts in the Klamath-Lake District. The team is scheduled to brief at 1:00 p.m. today and will enter unified command with the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Red Team at 6:00 p.m.

Overnight, firefighting resources successfully laid a dozer line from the heel of the fire, extending along its eastern and western flanks. Today, crews are focused on constructing a dozer line along the northern perimeter of the fire in an effort to halt its forward progression. Multiple air resources have been ordered to assist in the suppression efforts.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the area until 8:00 p.m. tonight. The warning indicates conditions conducive to rapid fire spread, including strong southwest to west winds with gusts up to 40 mph and low humidity. These weather conditions are expected to challenge the eastern fire lines throughout the day.

Klamath-Lake District Forester Teresa Williams acknowledged the difficulties posed by the weather, stating, “Due to unfavorable weather conditions, this is a rapidly evolving incident. We’re grateful to have the help of the incident management teams in managing and working to contain this fire and protect our communities.”

Firefighting teams will continue to work on containment efforts as the situation develops, with the primary focus on preventing the fire from advancing further. The cooperation between the ODF’s Incident Management Team 3 and the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Red Team aims to bring the fire under control and minimize the threat to nearby communities.
