Medford, Oregon- Travelers in southern Oregon are experiencing confusion this week due to an error on Google Maps, which has incorrectly indicated road closures on major routes. The affected highways include Oregon 62 and Oregon 230 in the areas around Trail, Prospect, Union Creek, Diamond Lake, and Crater Lake. Contrary to the information displayed on Google Maps, these highways remain open.
The only current closure in the region is at the north entrance to Crater Lake National Park, near the intersection of Oregon 138. The erroneous information on Google Maps has caused some travelers to be rerouted unnecessarily, often adding considerable mileage to their journey. In certain cases, the app has directed users onto forest roads, some of which are presently impacted by wildfire activity.
Local authorities have reached out to Google for clarification and correction of the issue but have yet to receive a response. In the meantime, travelers are strongly advised to consult TripCheck.com for the most accurate and up-to-date road conditions in Oregon.
UPDATE: ODOT reports the errors have been fixed.
