Hot and Tired Escaped Sheep Rescued in White City

White City, Oregon- White City experienced an unexpected visitor this past Monday morning when a sheep was spotted wandering around the area of Avenue G and Agate Road. This particular corner, notable for housing both a Jackson County Fire District 3 (JCFD3) fire station and administration building, is more accustomed to sightings of wild turkeys and the occasional pheasant, making the appearance of a sheep quite unusual.

Throughout the day, several residents and employees, including those from Cascade Fire Equipment across the street, noticed the sheep. It was evident that the sheep was distressed by the soaring temperatures, which reached triple digits that afternoon. Despite several attempts to approach and offer assistance, the sheep remained elusive, darting away each time someone got close.

The situation persisted until around 5:00 p.m., when Jacob Petty, one of the JCFD3 Community Care Providers, decided to take matters into his own hands. Jacob tracked the sheep down the road and initially attempted to lasso it, a task he later remarked was not as easy as it appears in the movies. Undeterred by the failed lasso attempt, Jacob managed to catch the sheep and secure it with a halter and lead rope.

With the assistance of JCFD3 Engine 22, the sheep was carefully loaded onto a trailer and provided with much-needed water. Although the rescue was not captured on surveillance video, Jacob’s efforts were applauded by his colleagues and the community.

The sheep is now in good hands, comfortably housed in a barn with ample food and water. A grooming session is on the agenda to ensure the sheep is in top condition. As of now, no owner has come forward to claim the adventurous animal. If anyone in White City is missing a sheep known for its wandering ways, please reach out to the local authorities.
