Applegate, Oregon- An illegal drone sighting in the vicinity of the Upper Applegate Fire forced the grounding of firefighting aircraft this evening. The presence of the drone in the operational area posed a significant risk to aerial firefighting efforts, prompting fire personnel to halt all flights for the night.
Firefighters, in coordination with deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO), are actively searching for the drone operator. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Authorities say the unauthorized use of drones in active wildfire zones creates a serious hazard for our crews and significantly hampers firefighting operations.
Officials are appealing to the community for assistance. Anyone with information regarding the illegal drone activity is encouraged to contact the JCSO Tip Line at (541) 774-8333.
The grounding of the firefighting aircraft underscores the critical need for public awareness and adherence to drone regulations, particularly in emergency situations where timely aerial support can be crucial in combating wildfires.
