Medford, Oregon – In a joint effort between the Medford Police Department (MPD), local retailers, and Special Agents from the Oregon Department of Justice, a targeted enforcement operation was conducted on Thursday, May 30. Focusing on retail theft, the operation took place at Burlington Coat Factory and TJ Maxx within the Medford Center, spanning from 12 PM to 8 PM.
Resulting from this concerted effort, seven individuals were apprehended for theft-related offenses.
MPD officials have noted a concerning uptick in confrontations between retail loss prevention staff and suspects, with suspects frequently arming themselves with pepper spray, knives, and firearms in anticipation of such encounters. This trend has deterred loss prevention personnel from intervening, out of fear for their safety.
In response to this issue, local retailers are collaborating with law enforcement agencies to conduct targeted operations aimed at preemptively curbing theft within their establishments. By allocating resources to these initiatives, law enforcement can effectively identify and dismantle organized retail theft networks.
Given the substantial interest from retailers, additional enforcement operations are already in the planning stages.
Businesses interested in joining forces with MPD in combating retail theft are encouraged to contact Lieutenant Don Lane at 541-774-2292.
