Public Input Wanted for Future I-5 South Stage Road Project

Medford, Oregon- As the region experiences continued growth and development, transportation challenges along Interstate 5 between the Phoenix and South Medford interchanges have become more pronounced. Currently, there are no direct east-west crossings over Interstate 5 and Bear Creek for a significant three-mile stretch, causing detours, congestion, and safety concerns for drivers.

In response, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), in collaboration with the City of Medford, is embarking on a comprehensive Facility Plan aimed at evaluating transportation enhancements along this critical corridor. The plan seeks to address issues related to connectivity, traffic safety, emergency response times, and overall travel efficiency.

Key Challenges:

  • Absence of local east-west connections leading to longer travel times and out-of-direction trips.
  • Increased strain on area interchanges and local roads due to traffic diversions.
  • Growing development exacerbating existing transportation challenges.

Project Objectives:
The South Stage Road Extension Plan targets the installation of a potential overpass or interchange on Interstate 5 at South Stage Road, situated between the Phoenix (Exit 24) and South Medford (Exit 27) interchanges. The overarching goal is to facilitate improved transportation connectivity and safety in this rapidly expanding area.

Community Engagement Opportunities:
To gather valuable insights from residents and stakeholders, the project team is hosting two engagement events:

In-Person Open House

  • Date: Wednesday, May 8, 6-8 p.m.
  • Location: RCC/SOU Higher Education Center, 101 South Bartlett Street, Medford, OR 95701
  • Spanish interpretation services will be available at the event. This open house will provide attendees with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with proposed roadway options and directly engage with project representatives to share their perspectives.

Online Open House

  • Access: Available through May 20 Participants can visit the project’s dedicated online platform to review project details, access materials, and submit feedback remotely.

The project team encourages all community members to participate actively in these events, emphasizing the importance of local input in shaping transportation improvements that will benefit south Medford and its surrounding areas.
