This is an update to our continuing coverage of this incident.
Last night, the Oregon State Police issued an Amber Alert following the murder of two women in West Richland, Washington, and the kidnapping of a 1-year-old infant, Roman Santos, at the request of the Washington State Patrol. The suspect, Elias Huizar, was reported to be driving a 2009 Toyota Corolla with Washington plates.
Today, at around 2:40 p.m., Oregon State Police troopers spotted the suspect’s vehicle southbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 221. Upon initiating a traffic stop, the suspect fled, leading to a pursuit involving two troopers at high speeds.
The chase culminated near milepost 209 with a minor collision, an exchange of gunfire, and the suspect fleeing again southbound. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the gunfire.
However, near milepost 197, the suspect crashed into a stopped commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and came to a stop in the median. Troopers approached the vehicle to find the suspect deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Remarkably, the infant, Roman Santos, was found unharmed and safely removed from the vehicle.
Among those involved in the exchange of gunfire were Superintendent Casey Codding and Sergeant Orly Johnson of the Oregon State Police.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office has been tasked with leading the investigation into the incident.
In a statement, the Oregon State Police expressed pride in the troopers’ dedication and courage, emphasizing their role in ensuring the safe return of Roman Santos.
“I want to start by sending our heartfelt support to the community in West Richland, Washington, a community dealing with senseless tragedy. My prayer is their community will come together to provide support and strength during this grievous time.” – Captain Kyle Kennedy, Oregon State Police.
