Central Point, Oregon- Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) received the esteemed honor of being named the Oregon 2023 DUII Enforcement Agency of the Year during a ceremony held last Thursday, April 4. The recognition was bestowed upon JCSO by the Oregon DUII Multi-Disciplinary Training Task Force, acknowledging the agency’s exceptional dedication to deterring and preventing DUIIs within the state.

Amidst a pool of 105 nominations spanning 15 award categories for the 2023 state-wide awards, JCSO stood out for its comprehensive approach to ensuring road safety and reducing DUII incidents within the community. In 2023, the JCSO’s Patrol Division, consisting of approximately 40 sworn personnel, carried out 1,032 crash investigations, executed 367 DUII arrests, and conducted 13,526 traffic stops.

Organizers say the award underscores JCSO’s multifaceted strategy, which not only focuses on DUII enforcement but also emphasizes proactive prevention and community engagement. Initiatives such as the Citizen Recognition Program encourage public involvement in identifying impaired drivers, while collaborations with emergency response teams strengthen overall road safety efforts.

JCSO’s commitment to education is evident through various programs launched in 2023. These include the Victim Impact Panel, aimed at elucidating the consequences of impaired driving, and the Drug Impairment Training for Educational Professionals (DITEP), designed to equip school personnel in identifying and intervening with drug-impaired students. Additionally, the Students for a Safer Tomorrow program educates high school students on DUII investigation and prevention strategies.

JCSO’s Citizens Academy offers insights into the dangers of DUII through discussions on crash statistics, impairment detection, and sobriety testing. The agency also prioritizes law enforcement training, providing refreshers on field sobriety testing, advanced roadside impaired driving enforcement, and specialized courses on drug influence evaluation.

Furthermore, JCSO allocates specialized resources and expertise to combat DUIIs effectively, including dedicated traffic units, Drug Recognition Experts, and a team specialized in Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction.

Officials remark that the receipt of the “2023 DUII Enforcement Agency of the Year” award underscores JCSO Patrol’s unwavering commitment and impactful strategies in creating safer roadways.
