Wilson Elementary Awarded Grant for Upgraded Inclusive Playground

Medford, Oregon- Wilson Elementary in Medford is set to enhance its inclusive playground thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Trail Blazers organization. The grant, aimed at promoting accessibility and inclusivity, will facilitate the purchase of equipment tailored for all abilities.

Michele Cleveland, Director of Special Education at the Medford School District, emphasized the institution’s commitment to fostering an environment where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The grant aligns with the district’s mission to integrate students of all ability levels.

The addition of sensory items and increased access points will enable students to engage meaningfully with one another on the playground. Among the planned acquisitions are the Sensory Wave Climber Corner Arch, designed to provide students with additional sensory tools, and a musical medley offering diverse heights and sounds for students to explore.

“We are exceptionally thankful to the Blazers organization,” said Wilson Principal Brent ‘Mac’ McConaghy. “These additional pieces of playground equipment will allow students to create more lasting relationships on the playground with their peers, which can help build up the social-emotional skills of all Wilson students.”

The funds are expected to be received by the district in the spring, with equipment installation scheduled for the summer or the upcoming school year.

The Trail Blazers Foundation focuses on initiatives that impact youth in Oregon and Southwest Washington.
