Medford, Oregon- During the Medford City Council meeting held on February 15th, a final decision was made as city council members unanimously voted in favor of funding for a new Rogue X sculpture. This approval marks a significant milestone, allowing the project to transition from the conceptual design phase into the production and installation phase.
The city of Medford has long been a staunch supporter of art projects, and this latest endeavor is no exception. The collaboration with Central Point based artist Melissa Ghiglieri, known for her previous contributions to city art projects, underscores the community’s commitment to fostering creativity and cultural enrichment.
With the project now greenlit by the city, plans are underway for the installation to be completed by this summer.

The sculpture’s design goals, as articulated by the artist, are twofold:
Injecting Color and Life: The new sports and recreation facility is poised to be a symbol of pride for Medford, boasting modern architecture. The Rogue X sculpture aims to serve as a vibrant artistic intervention, enriching the exterior of the building with dynamic compositions. It will not only complement the facility’s structure but also serve as a visual focal point, infusing warmth and vitality into the entry courtyard.
A Photogenic Community Icon: Beyond its role as a piece of art, the sculpture seeks to become an iconic symbol of the community. By incorporating elements that celebrate athletes and the spirit of Medford, the artwork aims to be more than visually appealing—it aims to be an invitation for shared experiences. Whether capturing moments of community gatherings, sports events, or simply as a backdrop for visitors, the sculpture intends to reflect the pride and vibrancy of Medford.
The “X” sculpture itself holds symbolic significance, representing the facility, while the artwork adorning its exterior represents the diverse tapestry of individuals who will utilize the space. One side will showcase athletic imagery, while the other will embody themes of nature and community in a cohesive artistic style.
As the project moves forward, anticipation builds for the eventual unveiling of this transformative addition to Medford’s Rogue X landscape.
