Formal Demobilization Ceremony Commemorates Oregon National Guard

Salem, Oregon – In a solemn ceremony held on January 19, 2024, at the Army Aviation Support Facility, 27 members of the Oregon National Guard, belonging to Detachment 1, Company Alpha, 1st Battalion – 112th Aviation, were formally demobilized after a 12-month deployment along the U.S. Southwest border.

Under the command of Col. Russell Gibson, 82nd Troop Command Brigade Commander, the unit played a pivotal role in supporting the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency. Col. Gibson commended the unit’s unwavering commitment during the demobilization ceremony, highlighting their remarkable achievements over the past year.

During their deployment, the Oregon National Guard members conducted a total of 385 missions, seamlessly operating day and night in their UH-72 Lakota helicopters. The focus of their operations was to detect and deter illegal border crossings, drug smuggling, and human trafficking.

Col. Gibson emphasized, “They flew a total of 1,825 hours across the area, with a majority of those missions flown at night.” He acknowledged the unit’s dedication to community service, noting that the Soldiers volunteered over 1,000 hours for various projects. Their contributions extended beyond their military duties, as they actively participated in initiatives such as assisting local food banks and distributing toys during the “Toys for Tots” drive.

Throughout their deployment, the Oregon Army National Guard members collaborated seamlessly with Soldiers from Idaho, North Dakota, Montana, and Wisconsin. This cooperative effort reinforced the strength of the National Guard across state borders.
