Inmate From Jackson County Dies in Custody at Deer Ridge Prison

Madras, Oregon– An adult in custody, David Americus Hixson, aged 61, passed away today at Deer Ridge Correctional Institution (DRCI) in Madras, Oregon, according to the Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC). Hixson had been incarcerated at DRCI, and his death is currently under investigation by the State Medical Examiner, following standard protocol.

Hixson entered DOC custody on March 8, 2022, from Jackson County, with an anticipated release date of October 29, 2027. The next of kin has been notified, and the Oregon State Police are actively involved in the ongoing investigation.

The Department of Corrections emphasizes its commitment to treating all in-custody deaths with the utmost seriousness. The agency, overseeing around 12,000 individuals across 12 institutions statewide, maintains strict protocols for handling such incidents.

Deer Ridge Correctional Institution (DRCI), situated four miles east of Madras, is a multi-custody prison currently housing approximately 800 minimum-custody incarcerated adults. DRCI offers various correctional programs and services, including education, trades programs, mental health treatment, cognitive and parenting programs, and institution work crews.

While crime information is generally public record, the DOC adheres to a policy of disclosing such details only upon request, out of respect for the privacy of the families and victims involved.
