Fatal Crash Impacted I5 For Three-Hours Near Eugene

On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, the Oregon State Police responded to a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 5, near milepost 189, in Lane County.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a northbound Kenworth commercial motor vehicle and trailer, under the operation of 49-year-old Shawn L. Brown, a resident of Eugene, was forced to slow down due to traffic congestion stemming from a prior motor vehicle accident further up the interstate.

Tragically, a northbound Ford cargo van, driven by 70-year-old Edward Norman Guidry of Cottage Grove, approached the slowed traffic at highway speeds and rear-ended the semi-trailer, resulting in a fatal impact.

The collision left Mr. Guidry, the operator of the Ford van, deceased at the scene, OSP reports.

The operator of the Kenworth, Mr. Shawn L. Brown, emerged from the accident with minor injuries.

The aftermath of this collision led to a disruption on the highway, with traffic being affected for approximately 3 hours during the on-scene investigation.

The Oregon State Police received assistance from multiple agencies, including the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, South Lane Fire/EMS, and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).
