At approximately 10:40 a.m., Salem Police officers responded to an emergency call in the 1300 block of Vista Avenue SE. The initial report detailed a man driving his truck into a residence and shooting a woman inside the home. The suspect fled the scene, leaving the victim in critical condition.
The injured woman was transported to Salem Health for medical attention.
Officers learned of a potential threat to the victim’s children, who attend Morningside Elementary School near the residence. Out of an abundance of caution, the school authorities implemented heightened security measures. The school was placed on lockdown status, and law enforcement officers were deployed to ensure the safety of the students and staff.
A description of the suspect and the vehicle involved was then dispatched to neighboring law enforcement agencies. At approximately 11:15 a.m., the suspect was spotted traveling eastbound on Highway 22E by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies managed to stop the vehicle just outside the city limits of Detroit.
Upon approaching the vehicle, deputies discovered that the suspect had taken his own life, succumbing to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Both the initial incident scene in Salem and the scene on Highway 22E near Detroit are currently under active investigation.
Authorities are withholding further details, including information about the victim and the deceased suspect, at this time.
