In recent weeks, the state of Oregon has seen its fair share of Powerball luck, with five individuals claiming $50,000 each. As excitement continues to mount, the Powerball jackpot for tonight’s drawing has reached a staggering $1.55 billion, making it the third-largest jackpot in Powerball history.
One of the winners, Jay Haggard, a 62-year-old resident of Tillamook, struck it big on September 30, 2023, when he matched numbers to win his $50,000 prize. Upon hearing about the winning ticket purchased in Tillamook on the radio, Haggard couldn’t contain his excitement and joyfully exclaimed to his son, “Hey, you know how someone hit the $50,000 Powerball in Tillamook? Well, I’m that guy!” Haggard plans to use his winnings to treat his family to Seattle Mariners games and settle some outstanding bills.
Two more $50,000 winning tickets emerged from Saturday’s drawing, one purchased in Hillsboro and the other in Beaverton. However, the massive top prize remains unclaimed. This big dollar jackpot run, which began on July 22, has generated a remarkable $5.6 million in Powerball winnings for Oregon. Notably, this marks the first time in Powerball history that two consecutive jackpot runs have led to billion-dollar jackpots.
During this record-breaking run, the Oregon Lottery has sold over $27 million in Powerball tickets, benefiting various state programs. Approximately one-third of sales will be allocated to support economic development, education, veteran services, state parks, and more.
It’s not just the winners who benefit from Powerball excitement. Retailers who sell lottery tickets receive commissions and bonus payments for lower-tier wins. For instance, an Oregon retailer selling a $1 million ticket would earn a $10,000 bonus.
Powerball is a multi-state jackpot game played in 44 states, along with the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Oregon’s largest Powerball win to date was a staggering $340 million jackpot in 2005.
The Oregon Lottery advises all players to sign the back of their tickets immediately to ensure they can claim their prize. In the event of winning a jackpot, players are encouraged to consult with a trusted financial planner or professional to develop a sound financial plan for their newfound wealth. Winners have up to a year to claim their prize, ensuring they have ample time to make careful decisions about their windfall.
