On September 11, 2023, authorities at Mt. Shasta High School notified the Mt. Shasta Police Department of a potential threat against the school made by one of its students. Swift action by law enforcement has since led to the arrest of a 16-year-old male juvenile and the seizure of multiple firearms and ammunition.
Following the notification from the school, officers immediately initiated an investigation. Their inquiry led to the conclusion that a credible threat to commit a future school shooting had been made by the student in question. In response, the investigating officer secured a search warrant.
On September 12, 2023, officers executed the search warrant at the juvenile’s residence. During the search, crucial evidence was discovered, firmly substantiating the gravity of the threats made. Authorities confiscated three firearms, including one shotgun and two rifles—a semi-automatic .308 rifle and a semi-automatic .22 rifle. Additionally, approximately 967 rounds of .22 ammunition and various shotgun ammunition were also seized.
The 16-year-old male juvenile was taken into custody and subsequently booked at the Siskiyou County Juvenile Hall. He faces charges related to making criminal threats against a school, a matter taken seriously by law enforcement and the community.
While the investigation remains ongoing, the Mt. Shasta Police Department has reassured the public that there is no current threat to the school, and there are no other persons of interest at this time. The department commended Mt. Shasta High School for its adherence to safety protocols and its invaluable assistance in the investigation.
