Victim is Shot Twice, Maced, and Pistol Whipped in Portland Home Invasion Robbery

On Sunday, August 28, 2022, at 2:36 p.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an apartment complex in the 9100 block of SW Oleson Road. Multiple community members called to report they had heard gunshots and saw a male in the apartment complex who was bleeding and appeared to have been injured.

Deputies arrived and contacted a man who was inside the apartment and had been shot through both legs. Deputies began providing medical aid to the victim until paramedics from Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue and Metro West Ambulance Service could take over.

The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries. The victim is currently in stable condition.

Detectives from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Detectives learned two men had broken into the apartment, and one of them sprayed the victim in the face with bear mace, pistol whipped him, and shot him. The two men left the scene before deputies arrived.

Detectives identified the two men responsible for the home invasion as 26-year-old Levi Dakota Garey and 42-year-old Joseph Andrew Mathews.

Detectives learned Garey and Mathews were in an apartment in Wilsonville. On August 29, 2022, detectives went to the location and, with the assistance of the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and Wilsonville Police Department, took Garey and Mathews into custody without incident.

Garey and Mathews were transported to the Washington County Jail and lodged. Garey was charged with attempted murder in the second degree and felon in possession of a firearm. Mathews was charged with burglary in the first degree and assault in the third degree. Authorities say additional charges are likely as the investigation continues.
