Just before 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7, Bend Police and Bend Fire & Rescue were called to an apartment complex in the 2000 block of NE Daggett Lane on multiple reports of smoke and activated sprinklers in the complex.
Upon arrival, fire personnel found a two-story unit in a multiunit complex with smoke coming out of it and an active fire on the second floor of the home. After entering the home, fire personnel discovered a deceased person on the first floor of the home and Bend Police detectives were called to the scene.
During the course of the investigation into the cause of the fire, a person of interest was located several blocks away and is currently in police custody. An investigation into the cause of the person’s death is still underway.
A positive identification has been made and next of kin was notified this afternoon. Bend Police have identified the person found dead in the residence as 53-year-old Glen Allan Ely, the resident of the home.
In addition, Bend Police have arrested Thomas Craig, 35, on suspicion of murder and arson in the incident. He also faces charges of failing to register as a sex offender and a warrant out of Colorado. Craig was transported and booked into the Deschutes County Jail this afternoon.
The fire was controlled around 3:30 a.m. Red Cross is assisting neighbors whose homes received water damage from the activated sprinkler system.
There are no outstanding suspects and there is no ongoing danger to the public.
Authorities say that this is an ongoing investigation and more information will be released when it becomes available.
