ROGUE RIVER, Ore. (Oct. 29, 2026)— Rogue River Junior Senior High School returned to normal operations Thursday morning after a report of a student potentially carrying a firearm prompted school officials to implement precautionary security measures.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO), deputies and Rogue River Police Department officers responded at approximately 7:31 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, following a report that a student might have a firearm in their backpack while traveling to school.
School officials placed the campus in a precautionary “secure status” while law enforcement investigated the report.
Authorities contacted the student after a parent dropped them off at school but before the student entered the building. Deputies determined the student did not have a firearm.
Law enforcement concluded the report was unfounded and that there was no credible threat to the school.
The secure status was lifted shortly after 8 a.m., allowing the school to resume normal operations.
A secure status is a precautionary safety measure designed to protect students and staff from potential threats outside a school building while allowing classroom activities to continue.
The procedure differs from a lockdown, which is implemented when an immediate threat exists inside or near a school and requires students and staff to remain hidden and quiet.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that all reports involving potential threats to school safety are taken seriously and thanked school officials for their cooperation during the investigation.
Authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat to students, staff or the surrounding school community.
No additional information was released.
