MACDOEL, Calif. (Sep. 28, 2026) — A 63-year-old Macdoel man was found dead from gunshot wounds inside a residence Saturday evening, prompting an investigation by the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office.
A sheriff’s deputy responded at about 7:28 p.m. Sept. 26 to a report of a deceased person at a residence in Macdoel, a small rural community in northern Siskiyou County near the Oregon border.
When the deputy arrived, an adult male was found deceased inside the residence with apparent gunshot wounds. The deputy then contacted the Sheriff’s Office Detectives Unit, which began a criminal investigation.
The victim was identified as Michael Emmett Hurlburt, 63, of Macdoel. His next of kin were notified, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Macdoel is an unincorporated community in Butte Valley along U.S. 97, about 11 miles south of Dorris and roughly 30 miles north of Weed. The rural community was established as a railroad station in 1906 and has a population of fewer than 100 residents, according to county planning documents.
The Sheriff’s Office has not released additional information about what led to the shooting or whether a suspect has been identified.
The investigation remains active.
