Child Dies After Van Rolls Down Embankment Near Coos Bay

COOS BAY, Ore. (Jul. 14, 2026)— A juvenile passenger was killed and the driver seriously injured after a single-vehicle rollover crash Monday morning on U.S. Highway 101 just south of Coos Bay, according to the Oregon State Police.

Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 10:07 a.m. on July 13 near milepost 240, about one mile south of Coos Bay.

According to a preliminary investigation, a northbound blue Chevrolet Venture van driven by a Coos Bay woman, drifted off the roadway into the median separating the northbound and southbound lanes. Investigators said the van then overcorrected, crossed both northbound lanes, left the roadway, traveled down an embankment, rolled over, and came to rest on its roof.

A juvenile passenger was transported to a local hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. The juvenile’s identity has not been released.

The driver was also taken to an area hospital with reported serious injuries.

State police said traffic on U.S. 101 was not affected during the on-scene investigation.

Before emergency medical personnel arrived, a passerby stopped and performed CPR on the injured juvenile until first responders reached the scene.

“The Oregon State Police acknowledges the actions of the passerby and recognizes that motor vehicle crashes involving children are especially traumatic for all involved,” the agency said in a statement.

The Oregon State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash. The specialized unit investigates fatal and serious injury crashes across Oregon, using advanced mapping technology, unmanned aircraft systems, and certified collision reconstructionists to document and analyze complex crash scenes.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The Oregon State Police was assisted at the scene by Coos Central Fire & Rescue, Greenacres Fire & Rescue, Bay Cities Ambulance, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
