Mt. Shasta Police Chief: Data Center Rumors Are False, Threats Will Lead to Arrests

MT. SHASTA, Calif. (Jun. 29, 2026) — The Mt. Shasta Police Department is pushing back against rumors circulating on social media about a proposed data center in the city while warning that threats made against public officials and their families will be aggressively investigated.

In a public message, Mt. Shasta Police Chief Robert Gibson said claims that a data center is planned for Mt. Shasta are inaccurate.

According to Gibson, the only information presented was that a company that constructs data centers had inquired about the former Crystal Geyser property. He said the site is located on county-owned property and that local officials have expressed “zero interest” in pursuing such a proposal.

Gibson said it was made clear that both the city manager and the City Council have no interest in moving forward with the idea.

The chief said his greater concern is the response the rumor has generated online and through other communications.

According to Gibson, several individuals have allegedly made threats of violence against City Council members, city employees and their families through social media posts, text messages and phone calls.

“Threats of violence are criminal acts that carry real consequences, including fines and jail time,” Gibson said.

He emphasized that while residents have the constitutional right to express disagreement and voice concerns about local government decisions, that protection does not extend to threats of violence.

“The Mt. Shasta Police Department will investigate, arrest, and prosecute anyone making such threats to the fullest extent of the law,” Gibson said. “That is not a warning—it is a commitment.”

Gibson concluded by urging residents to engage in respectful civic discourse, noting that community members, city staff and elected officials all live and work in the same community and should treat one another accordingly.
