Bend Woman Dies After Being Struck by Car in Safeway Parking Lot

BEND, Ore. (Feb. 14, 2026) — An 85-year-old Bend woman died Thursday after she was struck by a vehicle in a grocery store parking lot, authorities said.

Officers with the Bend Police Department responded at about 1:10 p.m. Feb. 12 to a report of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash in the parking lot of Safeway West at 320 SW Century Drive.

When officers arrived, they found Melinda Ann Lyons, 85, with life-threatening injuries. Witnesses told police Lyons was attempting to cross the parking lot to enter the store when she was struck.

Police said a silver Ford EcoSport driven by 77-year-old Evelyn Ranae Olsen of Bend was traveling at approximately 15 mph through the parking lot when it hit Lyons.

Medics with the Bend Fire & Rescue transported Lyons to St. Charles Bend, where she later died from her injuries.

The Bend Police crash reconstruction team responded to the scene and conducted an investigation.

Olsen remained at the scene and was cited for careless driving that causes an accident with serious injury or death to a vulnerable user, police said.
