Central Point, Oregon- An eighth grader from Scenic Middle School is drawing national attention for her athletic achievements and community spirit.

Jolene Sandberg, 13, is currently ranked in the top five nationwide in the Youth Athlete of the Year competition, a contest that honors standout young athletes while raising funds for cancer research and youth empowerment programs.

Sandberg is an all-around competitor, participating in cross country, competitive soccer and track. Last spring, she helped lead her 4×400 track team to a district championship, a victory she calls one of her proudest accomplishments.

“What I love most about sports is the thrill of a good play, the adrenaline in my chest, and the burn in my legs,” Sandberg said. “I love pushing myself, breaking personal records, and seeing how far I can go.”

She credits her motivation to a supportive coach and to her faith in God, which she says keeps her focused and positive.

The Youth Athlete of the Year competition, organized by Colossal, allows fans to cast daily votes online through Sept. 4. Free votes are available, while donation-based votes benefit the V Foundation for Cancer Research and the Why Not You Foundation.

The winner will receive $25,000 and a feature in Sports Illustrated, along with mentorship opportunities from high-profile athletes including Russell Wilson, Chaunté Lowe, and Haleigh Washington.

Mary Hagen, CEO of Colossal, said the competition is designed to spotlight young people who embody passion and perseverance. “Youth Athlete of the Year is a celebration of young people who bring passion, perseverance, and purpose to their sport—and to their lives,” Hagen said.
