Pedestrian Killed in Interstate 5 Collision Near Central Point

Central Point- A 50-year-old Eagle Point resident died early Sunday after being struck by a commercial truck while standing in a northbound lane of Interstate 5 in near Central Point, authorities said.

Oregon State Police said troopers responded at 4:50 a.m. Aug. 10 to the crash near milepost 35. A preliminary investigation found that a Freightliner commercial motor vehicle and trailer, driven by Gerardo Alemanurieta, 37, of Riverside, California, hit the pedestrian, identified as Scarlet Laresia Guenther.

Guenther was pronounced dead at the scene. Alemanurieta and a passenger in the truck, Alfonso Casteneda, 38, were uninjured, police said.

The highway remained open during the investigation, which was assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

The Oregon State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit — a specialized team trained in documenting and analyzing serious crashes — is leading the investigation. The unit uses advanced measuring tools and small unmanned aircraft systems to analyze crash and crime scenes.
