Cougar Sighting Closes Lucas Park in Eagle Point; Authorities Monitoring Area

Lucas Park

Eagle Point, Oregon- Authorities in Eagle Point have closed Lucas Park and a nearby trail following reports of a cougar sighting Wednesday evening, the Eagle Point Police Department said.

Officers responded to reports of a cougar in the Lucas Park area and closed the park as a precaution. They also flagged a trail off Arrowhead Trail as closed while they assess the potential risk to the public.

Despite an extensive search, officers were unable to locate the animal as of late Wednesday. The park will remain closed overnight as police continue to monitor the area. The Oregon State Police and Fish and Game personnel have been consulted and are providing additional support and resources.

“We are keeping the park closed for the night,” the department said in an updated statement. “We will continue checking the area throughout the night.”

Residents in the area are urged to remain alert and keep a close eye on outdoor pets.

No injuries or direct encounters have been reported. Authorities have not yet determined the level of threat posed by the cougar, but emphasize that the closures are a precautionary measure.

Anyone who sees the animal or notices unusual wildlife activity is encouraged to contact local law enforcement immediately.
