Bend Resident Living in Car Hospitalized After Vehicle Fire

Bend, Oregon- A vehicle fire early Friday morning in the Juniper Ridge area sent one person to the hospital and destroyed a Nissan Pathfinder SUV that was being used as living quarters, according to Bend Fire & Rescue.

At 7:17 a.m., multiple 911 callers reported a column of smoke near the Central Oregon Irrigation Hydro Plant on City of Bend property. Responding crews arrived to find the SUV fully engulfed in flames, with fire spreading to a nearby tree and adjacent vegetation.

Firefighters from Bend Fire & Rescue quickly contained and extinguished the blaze with assistance from a water tender provided by Redmond Fire. One individual was transported by ambulance to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. The condition of the person was not released.

An investigation revealed that the occupant of the SUV had been using a candle for warmth. The candle ignited nearby combustibles, causing the fire. The vehicle and its contents were declared a complete loss, with damages estimated at $8,000.

Bend Fire & Rescue is reminding the public to maintain a safe distance between heating devices and anything that can burn. Officials advise that portable heaters should be rated for indoor use to avoid risks such as fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.

No additional injuries were reported, and the fire was prevented from spreading further.
