Skeletal Remains Identified as Missing Wimer Man in Suspicious Death Investigation

Applegate, Oregon- The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) has identified skeletal remains discovered in April 2024 outside Jacksonville as those of Nathan Louis Merkel, 63, of Wimer. Merkel had been reported missing in September 2023. His next of kin has been notified.

The remains were found on April 14, 2024 in the Applegate area. JCSO detectives and medical examiners responded to the scene, with JCSO Search and Rescue assisting in the recovery due to the rugged terrain and remote location. The exact location has not been disclosed due to the ongoing investigation.

Detectives believe Merkel died under suspicious circumstances. Persons of interest have been identified and are currently in custody out of the county on unrelated charges. Their names will be released pending further investigation and possible charges.

Authorities stated there is no threat to the public at this time. No additional details have been released.
