Medford, Oregon- Macy’s announced late last week, its plan to close 66 stores across 22 states this year, continuing its efforts to realign operations under its “Bold New Chapter” initiative. The closures are part of the retailer’s broader strategy to shutter approximately 150 underperforming locations by the end of 2026.

The affected stores are located in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. Macy’s expects most of these stores to cease operations by the end of the first quarter of 2025.

“Closing any store is never easy,” said Macy’s CEO Tony Spring in a statement. “But as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service.”

The “Bold New Chapter” initiative, first announced in February 2024, aims to position Macy’s for sustainable and profitable sales growth. In addition to store closures, the retailer plans to invest in its 350 “go-forward locations,” enhance product offerings, and elevate service quality.

Macy’s reported in a press release, that teams are also exploring opportunities to open smaller-format stores, as well as additional Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury locations.

The Oregon market will see two closures: the Salem Center store in Salem and the Streets of Tanasbourne store in Hillsboro. However, all three Macy’s locations in Medford—Macy’s, Macy’s Backstage, and Macy’s Home—will remain open at this time.

Macy’s described the restructuring as a necessary step to “simplify and modernize end-to-end operations,” allowing the company to adapt to changing consumer preferences and focus on more profitable areas of its business.

With these changes, the company says they seek to strike a balance between reducing costs and investing in initiatives to attract and retain customers in its remaining locations.
