Flood Warning in Effect for Southwest Oregon and Northern California

Medford, Oregon- The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood warning in effect until 7:00 AM on Sunday for parts of northern California and southwest Oregon. The warning covers Siskiyou County in California and the counties of Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson, and Josephine in Oregon. (EXPIRED)

Current Conditions

As of 9:25 PM, Doppler radar has detected heavy rainfall in the region. Between 0.5 and 1.5 inches of rain have already fallen, with an additional 2 to 5 inches expected in the warned areas. This excessive rainfall is causing urban and small stream flooding, with rivers, creeks, and other low-lying areas experiencing rapid water level rises.

Streams in the affected areas are continuing to rise due to runoff from earlier rainfall, and standing or slow-moving water has been reported in numerous locations.

Affected Areas

The warning applies to several communities, including but not limited to:

Oregon: Grants Pass, Roseburg, Coos Bay, Brookings, North Bend, Myrtle Creek, and Bandon.

California: Siskiyou County.

Residents in areas such as Port Orford, Sutherlin, Cave Junction, and Lakeside should also remain vigilant as conditions are expected to deteriorate further.

Safety Precautions

The NWS advises the public to take the following precautions:

• Avoid driving through flooded roads: Floodwaters can obscure road conditions, and most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.

• Report flooding: If it is safe to do so, report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement, who can relay the information to the NWS.

• Monitor updates: Stay informed through local news or weather updates as conditions may change rapidly.

Impact and Preparedness

Flooding poses a significant risk to infrastructure and personal safety. Areas prone to flooding, including creeks, rivers, and low-lying locations, are expected to experience disruptions. Residents should prepare for potential evacuation orders and ensure that emergency supplies, including water, food, and medications, are readily available.
