Medford, Oregon- U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley announced a $600,000 federal grant to Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport (MFR) aimed at expanding air service between Medford, Oregon, and Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas (DFW). This investment, awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, is intended to support the development of a revenue guarantee and an associated marketing plan to facilitate new service.
Senator Wyden emphasized the economic benefits of bolstering regional airport infrastructure, noting, “Making sure our regional airports have the support they need to keep Oregonians connected and moving is essential for the local economy. I applaud this federal investment for Rogue Valley International Medford Airport and will continue to advocate for more resources to support airport and infrastructure improvements across Oregon.”
Senator Merkley also highlighted the importance of regional airports as central hubs for local communities. “Oregon’s regional airports serve as vital hubs for our communities—supporting local businesses, connecting travelers to world-class recreational opportunities, and providing essential lifelines during natural disasters,” Merkley said. “This federal funding will enable Medford-Rogue Valley International Airport to expand its service to Dallas-Ft. Worth and address staffing needs for this new route, broadening connectivity for Oregonians.”
The Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport, which was awarded a Small Community Air Service Development (SCASD) Grant, will use the funds to encourage new air service through a financial guarantee and promotional activities aimed at attracting airlines. Amber Judd, Director of the Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport, expressed optimism about the new funding. “This grant funding is an instrumental step toward creating this connection; however, it’s important to note that airlines are not bound to initiate service simply due to an airport receiving a grant award,” Judd stated. “We are encouraged by American Airlines’ interest, and we are confident this funding underscores the strong demand and community support for a direct Medford-Dallas route. We look forward to the potential for this new service to benefit travelers and support local economic growth.”
The announcement is part of a larger effort by Senators Wyden and Merkley to secure federal resources for Oregon’s airports. Recently, they announced $6.41 million for upgrades at Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport and $4 million for the Prineville Airport, intended to extend taxiways and alleviate congestion. Additionally, a $5 million federal investment was allocated for a terminal reconstruction project at Eugene’s Mahlon Sweet Airport in collaboration with U.S. Representative Val Hoyle.
This investment is anticipated to strengthen regional connections and improve access for travelers across Oregon, advancing infrastructure that supports local economies and community development.
