Elderly Man Dies After Interstate 5 Pedestrian Crash

Douglas County, Oregon- On Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 10:21 p.m., Oregon State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 5, near milepost 108, in Douglas County.

The incident involved a pedestrian, identified as William Nailus Baird, 74, from Myrtle Creek, who was walking on a curve in the northbound fast lane when he was struck by a northbound Peterbilt commercial motor vehicle, operated by Jashandeep Sran, 24, of British Columbia. Despite attempts by the Peterbilt operator to avoid the collision, Baird was declared deceased at the scene. The truck driver, Sran was not injured in the incident.

The highway was impacted for approximately 3 hours during the on-scene investigation. Oregon State Police received assistance from Myrtle Creek PD, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and ODOT in managing the situation and conducting the investigation.
