Oregon Man Arrested After Allegedly Pushing Person into Oncoming Train

Portland, Oregon– A man is currently in custody, facing attempted murder and a slew of other charges, following an incident where he allegedly pushed a TriMet rider into the path of an oncoming MAX train. The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Transit Police Division (TPD) responded swiftly to the incident on Tuesday, May 21, at 4:19 p.m. at the Providence Park MAX Station near SW 17th Avenue and SW Yamhill Street.

According to reports, the assailant pushed a fellow passenger into the path of an approaching MAX train while waiting at the station. Quick action from the TriMet operator, who deployed the emergency braking system, prevented a tragic outcome. Deputies arrived promptly at the scene, finding the victim with minor injuries, while the suspect had fled.

Approximately 20 minutes later, multiple calls came in reporting various thefts near SW 10th Avenue and SW Yamhill Street, matching the description of the earlier assailant. Transit Police deputies, along with officers from the Portland Police Bureau, responded and successfully apprehended the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Michael Lynn Moreland.

Investigations revealed no prior connection between Moreland and his victim. Moreland now faces a litany of charges, including attempted murder in the second degree, attempted assault in the second degree, assault in the fourth degree, robbery in the third degree, criminal mischief in the second degree, escape in the third degree, disorderly conduct in the second degree, and interfering with public transportation.

The Portland Police Bureau is actively investigating the preceding thefts, with the possibility of additional charges.
