Body of Missing Eugene Diver Located Near Southern Oregon Coast

Winchester Bay, Oregon- The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the United States Coast Guard (USCG), initiated a large-scale search operation for 47-year-old Jeffery Scott Harris after he went missing during a scuba diving excursion in the Umpqua River near Winchester Bay. Despite extensive efforts, including dive teams and aerial reconnaissance, Harris remained unaccounted for until his body was discovered on February 12, 2024. The investigation into his death, led by the Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office, has ruled out foul play.

A Eugene resident, 47-year-old Jeffery Scott Harris, is dead after failing to resurface from a scuba diving trip in the Umpqua River near the mouth of the Pacific Ocean. On Sunday, January 29, 2024, at around 12:30 p.m., Harris embarked on his diving expedition, having previous diving experience. Concerns arose when he did not return as expected, prompting a call from a friend to 9-1-1 dispatchers later that afternoon.

Upon receiving the 9-1-1 call, emergency personnel, including the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Coast Guard (USCG), promptly initiated a widespread search effort. Two USCG boats and a helicopter scoured the water, while the Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue unit deployed K9 teams and ATVs to comb the surrounding land until nightfall.

Despite search efforts, including the deployment of dive rescue teams from Douglas and Lane counties, hazardous diving conditions hindered underwater exploration on the following day. The USCG helicopter continued aerial reconnaissance throughout the morning as land patrols persisted.

“We have been in communication with Jeffrey’s family and have kept them updated as to the efforts that are being made” stated Lieutenant Brad O’Dell.

The exhaustive search concluded tragically when, on Monday, February 12, 2024, at approximately 8:45 a.m., authorities received a report of a deceased body discovered near Sparrow Park Road. Deputies and Oregon State Troopers promptly responded, confirming the body to be that of Jeffery Scott Harris. Despite extensive search operations, Harris’ remains eluded detection until that point.

The Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office assumed jurisdiction over the case, launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Harris’ death. While the cause of death remains undisclosed pending further investigation, authorities have ruled out foul play. Harris’ next of kin has been notified of the devastating outcome.

As investigations continue, authorities urge caution and adherence to safety protocols for all those engaging in recreational activities along Oregon’s waterways.
