Authorities say Nathaniel G. Bennett, a 34-year-old Bend transient, was apprehended by Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) deputies on November 24, 2023. Bennett faces a litany of charges, including Unlawful Use of a Weapon (x3), Coercion, Menacing (x3), Attempted Assault 4th Degree, and Reckless Endangering (x2).
The unfolding of events began around 3:00 pm when DCSO deputies responded to a reported weapons offense involving a tour group riding utility terrain vehicles near Bennett’s camp. It was revealed that Bennett, allegedly agitated by the presence of the group, confronted them and brandished a firearm, even discharging it dangerously close to a juvenile female.
Efforts to safely engage Bennett were initially unsuccessful, prompting additional DCSO resources, including SWAT and Negotiators, to be dispatched to the scene. Negotiators utilized an armored vehicle to communicate with the uncooperative suspect. Despite the challenges, K9 units Ronin and Delta were deployed and successfully apprehended Bennett as he attempted to reach his van, believed to contain additional weapons.
Following the K9 capture, Bennett was transported to a nearby hospital by Bend Fire for evaluation of potential injuries. Subsequently, he will be lodged at the Deschutes County Adult Jail to face the charges levied against him.
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to Bend Fire for their swift response and assistance in transporting the suspect.
There were no reported serious injuries to the tour group or law enforcement personnel. No additional information was released by officials at this time.
All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
